Recording Content and Techniques
Recorded Bio

Recording Your Reading
Regardless of the hardware or software used, following these suggestions will result in a better recording.

1. Find a quiet space to record in, away from street noise, appliance noises, and household interruptions.

2. If possible, use a mic stand or tripod, or prop your phone or recorder in such a way that your hands are free and you can maintain a consistent distance from the mic or device.

3. Your mouth should be a handwidth from the recorder.

The mic is in the bottom of the phone so keep that in mind when positioning the phone.

4. One of the challenges of recording is the “plosive” sounds of certain consonants which are impossible to edit out and also impossible to avoid.

Here’s advice from an audio engineer about mic position to reduce this problem:

As always, prevention is infinitely better than cure, and stopping plosives from reaching the mic is really all about positioning. Ideally, the mic should be positioned well above and/or slightly to one side of the mouth. I find that raising the mic to around forehead height works well, as this keeps it away from the track of direct plosive blasts from the mouth, and also encourages the vocalist to stand up straight, which aids their breathing.

5. Read your piece aloud to become familiar with its sound.

6. Record two takes without stopping, leaving 5 seconds of silence at the beginning, between each reading, and at the end after you have finished speaking. This helps the editor assess and correct for room noise which markedly improves the result.

7. If you make a mistake part way through, stop and leave a short pause. Begin again before the point in the text where you goofed. We will edit for the corrected version. This is especially important if you are reading a longer prose piece. With poetry you might just repeat the stanza or piece as a whole.

8. Music will be placed at the beginning and end of your reading. It is also likely, especially with longer pieces, that there are places where you, as the author/reader, might feel that a pause in the reading would be appropriate. Feel free to create such pauses as this is useful for the editor to consider inserting some transitional music.

9. Review both takes and, if you aren’t happy with the result, delete them and record two more takes without stopping.
